Can a man who spent most of his adult life cloistered in a rural Kentucky monastery change the world? Thomas Merton did and his writing continues to make waves some forty years after his death. This documentary follows Merton's path from a Communist-leaning Columbia undergrad to his death in Bangkok at age 53. Called by some 'a believing beatnik' or 'the lost soul of the 20th century' Merton is one of the most influential writers of his time.
